This article provides an itinerary for a family history tour of places and people that lived in the Hesse region of Germany.
Names such as Meurer, Grunewald, Sandrock, Eckermann, Uckermann, Marggraf, Nadus, Boppenhausen, Scheffer, Färber, all feature in the places shown below.
The Meurer family that immigrated to Australia in 1858 can be traced back to the State of Hesse in south central Germany.

An obvious tour starting point would be Hanover, the nearest large city,
- 1st stop Rinteln 4, this was the birthplace of Anna Katherine Marie Grunewald,1782, and birthplace of her first daughter in 1802 and the third child, a son in 1806 (between 1806 and 1809 they moved to Gensungen at which time our GGG Grandmother, Susanne was born). It is suspected that Anne Katherine met her husband Johan Konrad Meurer in Rinteln, he was an Army Surgeon and likely posted at an Army facility nearby. Johann and Anne Marie were married here in 1801. At this stage no family specific items have been identified to see here, however targets could be the Army barracks, and a house street address if this could be found, the Church where the baptisms and marriage occurred would be interesting to visit
- 2nd stop Göttingen 2, This is where Augusta Heiscke was born in 1832. It appears that Ernst and Augusta met here as their first child Sophia Meurer was born here in 1856. Nothing is known of Augusta’s parents, it would be interesting to try to locate records of her parents and other family members. (update 2024: Augusta’s parents and grandparents are now known – see link here)
- 3rd stop Kassel 1, This is where Anne Marie’s second daughter Susanne (our GGG Grandmother) was born in 1804 and she was baptised at the Kassel garrison Church in 1804. Kassel is also where her son Ernst Louis Meurer was living in 1830 in the maternity and poor institution at Kassel, although he was actually born in nearby Gensungen in 1830.
- Westuffeln 19, this is where Catharine Elisabeth Nadus was born in 1660, it is also where Nad Vitus, Catherines father, died in 1684 and Nad’s wife, Anna Kuhn, died in 1677.
- 4th stop Wollrode 6, this is where Johann Konrad Meurer was born in 1772 and where his father Alexander Johann, the preacher died in 1774. Alexander Johan was also known to be here between 1764 and 1772 as the last three children were born here.
- 5th stop Melsungen 7, Alexander Johan was a preacher in this town, date unsure (Photo of Church)
- 6th stop Obervorschütz 12, Johann Hermann Meurer was Pastor here certainly from 1705 to 1708 (and maybe until after 1716), his daughter was born here in 1713, and his son Johann Alexander was born in Obervorschütz in 1716, suggesting he was Pastor here through those years also

We have an address where Johann and Anne Marie lived in this town, in 1815 they lived at Sunderbachstraße 53, Gensungen. Johann died at Trier but he was buried here at Gensungen in 1815. His wife Anne Marie was buried here in 1849 also four of their children were also buried here.

Dethard died here in 1698. The family home of the Uckermann’s was this Rathaus der Stadt Wanfried. Dethard’s wife Juliane, was also born Abt 1625 and died 1695 here. In 1602 Juliannes father Jost Christoph Poppenhausen was born here, he was the Rentmeister since 1634 (the government office dealing with the finances of the Landesherr (the nobleman ruling over the territory)) Jost Christoph died in Trendelburg, Kassel, in 1650
