the Wilding Family at Boorowa

This parish map dated 1905, but drawn from earlier parish maps, shows the extent of the Wilding land in the Boorowa area. John Thomas Wilding arrived at Boorowa (Burrowa) in about 1837 and leased his first 60 acres in the 1850’s. JTPW is the great great grandfather of the current gen ‘X’ Wilding descendants (Meurer/Jones/Hawkes etc).
There are 14 portions on this map with a Wilding name attached totalling about 1400 acres. You will notice that many blocks are not adjoining so it would not have been easy to move stock between paddocks. John Thomas Wilding’s house and barn are located on portion 65 on the map.

Another interesting comment to make is that the portions are owned in several family names. Robert Charles, Emily, Annie Millicent, & Thomas. This tactic was widely used by settlers to circumvent laws limiting the amount of land that could be leased by the one person, arranging the lease in spouse and children’s names.

A note in red at the bottom of another copy of this map states that the Wilding Estate is proposed for division into Soldier Settlement blocks to be offered to returning soldiers from WWI.
