John Wilding b1754- first fleeter
A John Wilding was a convict aboard the Scarborough, one of the first fleet vessels to Port Jackson (Sydney) in 1788. Regrettably he was one of 43 convicts that died on the voyage of a total of 775 convicts who boarded at Portsmouth, England.
John Wilding (alias John Warren) was born in 1754 at Lavenham, Suffolk, England. He was convicted at Bury St Edmunds on 23rd March 1784 on the charge of felony, stealing a watch and two gold cases with a value of 200 shillings, he received a sentence of transportation for 7 years having been originally sentenced to death. On 13 May 1787 aged mid 30’s, he began the 252 day journey on the first fleet to Australia, he was aboard the Scarborough, one of eleven ships of the first fleet. His occupation was listed as labourer. He died in 1787.
We still don’t know his exact relationship to the later Wilding’s (John Thomas Porter Wilding and Thomas Wilding) who also came to Australia as prisoners of mother England. One day we will find the link and his story will be known.

Subject: TRANSPORTEES FROM SUFFOLK TO AUSTRALIAHello List.
Does anyone have a copy of this book, “Transportees from Suffolk to Australia 1787-1867” by Richard Deeks? Is it still available? If not and anyone has a copy I wonder if they could kindly do a look up for me.
I am trying to find out if anyone with the surname of Wilding from Suffolk was transported during that time. Any other ideas where I might look?Thank you very much.
