Smedbyn – the BlackSmiths village

Smedbyn is a very small locality in the northern Swedish province of Dalsland within the Parish of Rölanda, about 10 kilometers from the Norwegian border.

Our Plomgren ancestors originated in Smedbyn in the period around 1700, and likely much earlier. Documents are available that prove their occupation of Smedbyn in that period.

The English translation for Smedbyn is ‘Blacksmiths village’ so we can speculate the family may have been Blacksmiths.

The names of the residents of Smedbyn in Rölanda parish that are related to us are …

Anders Andersson (b1783) our GGG Grandfather, left Smedbyn before 1813 and traveled to Gullholmen, a very small island on the west coast of Sweden to marry and raise his family.
